Think About What is Best for the ChildWhether you are negotiating a settlement for child support or litigating a child support case in court, you need to pay close attention to what is important for the child and his or her future. You must try to plan ahead and in some cases, look years down the road. What is best for the child may not be what appears best for you, especially if you are the one who will bear the majority of expenses for bringing up this child. Ask yourself what will it cost to feed, clothe, insure, educate and keep active this child each and every month. And will this allow the child the basics needed for a happy and productive life. What would the child have if both parents were together and participated in the raising of the child, and what are you able to provide on your own? These can be tough questions to answer, but they must be addressed. For example, if you are a custodial parent and the non-custodial parent is requesting an agreement that allows for a non-withholding payment stipulation; Is this in the child’s best interest? Or would it be better to have the support withheld directly from his employer and paid through the court? Will the Child have sufficient health coverage? What if the child requires braces, glasses, or special medical attention? How will you provide this for the child?
